What does it actually mean to discern God's will? Not just to pray and hope for the best, but to engage our whole selves in the process of listening? This message takes us into one of the most honest and practical conversations we can have as people of faith.
Drawing from Romans 12:2, where we are called not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, we discover that this renewal is not simply an intellectual exercise. The word translated as 'minds' points to something far richer: the entire system by which we make decisions and perceive the world, encompassing our heads, our hearts, and our bodies. God does not speak only to our brains. God speaks to the whole person. This reframes everything about how we approach the big questions in our lives.
When we are standing between two seemingly good choices, whether about relationships, work, calling, or community, we are invited into a discernment process that honors every dimension of who we are. The head asks whether a decision leads us toward faith. The heart asks whether it moves us toward love. The gut asks whether it leads us toward hope and action. Together, these three dimensions give us a far more complete picture than any pros-and-cons list alone ever could. And at the center of it all is the ancient promise that God longs to be gracious to us, if only we will let that conversation begin.
As Pastor Scott says: "To pray to be indifferent to anything except God's will. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else."
Discernment Practice:
1. Determine the question for discernment
2. Prayer (and fasting, a body prayer)
*2a: "I am created to praise, love, and serve God." - Ignatius
*2b: "I am invited to participate and respond to God's leadings."
*2c: "May I be indifferent to anything except God's will. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else."
*2d: "I confess known bias, prejudice, and disordered attachments."
3. Write your Core Values
4. Go to your HEAD Space and lists pros and cons
*does this decision lead me toward FAITH?
5. Go to your HEART.
*who is my NEIGHBOR?
6. Go to your BODY/GUT Space.
*does this decision give me HOPE?
